STR, Kabilan release song on note ban woes

Even as the Opposition party took to the streets protesting demonetisation on Wednesday, Kollywood found a novel way to register their opinion- with a song! On the first anniversary of ‘demon’, the team of the upcoming film Thattarom Thookarom released a single, Panama dhipizhappu , highlighting the travails of such a drastic economic decision.

With lyrics by Kabilan Vairamuthu, the song had been rendered by Simbu (STR). The idea behind the song was to highlight the general scenario that prevailed across the country on the night of November 8, 2016.

According to Kabilan Vairamuthu, “The song Panamadhipizhappu is an interpretation of the scenes and chaos that unfolded that night. It shows people queuing up in front of ATMs, trying frantically to exchange old notes and all of that.

We have also highlighted the fact that our country has several multi-millionaires who are defaulters and who have fled the country after taking loan from banks. In fact, my favourite line from the song is based on this.”

Humming the line, he explains, “Ezhai veetil irupadhellam sivappu panamada…kuruvi pola setha kaasil kallam illada… naata maatha venumunu neenga nenacha..coat pota gundargalin sanga pudingada..” (The poor shed their sweat and blood to earn money while also paying taxes. If you want to bring about a change, get the money from the capitalist who is disloyal to the nation).” According to the team, the song has become an instant hit on social media and has over 10,000 views within few minutes of its release.

“Since STR has lent his voice to the song, I did not want it to be slow. He is known for singing peppy tracks with ease and hence we wanted to play to his strengths,” he said. Since the time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi implemented the note ban on November 8, 2016, there is still active debate on whether the move is a beneficial one or not. The ruling party and the Opposition are still at loggerheads on the pros and cons of the scheme and incidentally, double Oscar-winning singer-composer AR Rahman had recently launched a 19-minute track, The Flying Lotus, on the same theme.
