Dhanushkodi island is connected to Rameswaram by a newly laid 9.5 kilometre road that was inaugurated by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on the second anniversary of former President APJ Abdul Kalam. However, recently the National Highways had proposed to extend the four roads from Madurai to Ramanathapuram till Rameswaram and works are going on at a fast pace.
The officials are also planning to construct another bridge in Pamban and bypass roads near Rameswaram. In the meantime, men from a private company from Hyderabad are carrying out soil testing at Dhanushkodi.
While they were testing, workers said that dynamic cone penetration test was carried out and it was a standard procedure in soil testing.Â
The tests are being carried out to make the road into a 4-way highway in order to allow heavy vehicles.Â
As the area is fully covered by beach sand, soil testing is being carried out in the first phase, said sources.
