Water supply to Sathuvachari residents affected

Residents of Ponniamman Nagar, east and west, in Sathuvachari on the outskirts of Vellore town, have not been supplied water for nearly a month following the bursting of the supply pipe linked to the Hogenakkal water supply scheme.

According to residents, this has resulted in households in the locality’s six streets going without water. While houses with borewells managed to pump up ground water, others had perforce to buy packaged water in 25 litre cans.

Nageswaran, a local resident, claimed, “The only saving grace for us is that water suppliers have not jacked up the price using this as an opportunity. They continue to supply water at the usual rate of Rs 30 for a 25 litre can.”

Although residents have repeatedly complained to the Vellore district administration, they have not had any succour, despite the district Collectorate being located a mere stone’s throw away.

“Officials told us that the supply pipe of the scheme had broken near Vaniyambadi and that it would be repaired soon. But even after so many days passing, we have not seen any results,” Nageswaran added.

Although unofficially, administrators claimed that water in the Palar river was the reason for their inability to effect repairs, inflow in the Palar ended a week ago, when rains stopped in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, from where Palar gets its inflow. As locals are also aware of this, it might soon result in agitations for water if official action is further delayed, said another resident.

Not getting drinking water supply when rain in the district is filling up irrigation tanks reveals the usual official apathy, residents alleged.
