Coimbatore: Six students held for kidnapping youth for ransom
Six students of a private engineering college here were held on Monday for abducting the son of a realtor demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh.

Police said Gnana Anandan (21), son of Manoharan, a realtor from Peelamedupudur in Coimbatore, who was studying final year B Com at a private college, had gone missing on Nov 3.
Based on a complaint from his parents, the Peelamedu police registered a case and tracked a ransom call received by Manoharan, in which he was asked to come to an isolated area in Malumichampatty. “The abductors demanded Rs 5 lakh to free his son,” police said. On tracking the call location, a police team swooped down on a dilapidated building, where they found Gnana lying gagged with both his hands tied. On seeing the cops, the abductors took to their heels. However, they managed to nab six persons. Three other persons managed to flee and a search is on to nab them.
The arrested persons were identified as Rajamanickam (21), Manikandan (20) from Madurai, Sudhakar (21), Muruganandam (20) from Theni, Gokul (20) from Kovilpatti and Aravind (20) from Erode district. Police inquiries revealed that Gnana was into gold jewel trading along with a friend. “The two prime accused persons Rajamanickam and Manikandan had bought gold jewels from the victim’s friend, which they later found to be fake ones. Thereafter, they asked Gnana to help them get their money back, but he refused to intervene,” police said.
