‘Chinna Gounder’ rides a cart to protest venue
Attempting to strike a chord with the rural folk, DMDK chief Vijayakanth chose to take a bullock cart ride to lead a protest demanding various welfare projects for farmers at Udumalpet in Tirupur district on Sunday.

He journeyed on the bullock cart for almost a km, amid applause from party workers and fans, all through his way from Eripalayam to the protest venue. Reminiscing his film days, Vijayakanth said, “I am now reminded of my acting in the film Chinna Gounder, in which I go by a bullock cart to meet people and know their problems. In a similar way, I am here to know your problems,” he said.
Speaking at the protest, Vijayakanth slammed both the state and Centre for failing to implement welfare schemes. “The Anaimalaiaru and Nallaru projects, which should be beneficial to farmers have been left in cold storage for around 60 years,” he said.
The DMDK chief also urged the government to provide compensation to farmers for dried coconut trees, revive the defunct Amaravathy Sugar Factory, and make Amirtha Express from Thiruvananthapuram to Kanniyakumari to stop at Udumalpet junction.
