    Rain plays havoc in Nagai, Tiruvarur and Thanajvur districts

    The constant lashing of rains across the delta districts, especially at the Nagapattinam district, where samba has been cultivated in an area of 1.75 hectare, has made the crops submerged in most parts of the district while the fishermen kept off the sea due to rough weather.

    With the heavy rainfall experienced in Thalanayar in Nagapattinam, a few places including Vandal, Kundooranveli, Pazhaitrangarai of Thalaynayar have been abandoned due to the inundation of roads to these villages, on Saturday. Following this, the state disaster response force has rescued around 4,500 people and have made them to stay in three rescue centres.

    According to the IMD reports, the district had received a rainfall of 134 mm until Saturday morning. While the earlier days of the week had witnessed the highest rainfall in the northern part of Nagapattinam district, now the southern tip of the district has also received plenty of rains.

    While there was a continuous rainfall since Saturday morning, Sirkazhi and Tharangambadi taluks are in deep trouble, where already three canals had breached in the last two days. Since, there was not much of rain on Friday till afternoon, it helped the water to drain. As it again started to rain from Friday evening, it resulted in flooding of the areas like, Vilakumulu street, Vaitheeeswarankoil of Sirkazhi as well as Thalachangadu of Tharangambadi taluk. 

    Meanwhile, in the districts, for the sixth day, around 60,000 hectares of crops have been submerged and the farmers in the region have started to panic.

    Similar conditions prevailed in Tiruvarur and Thanjavur. However, it was less rainfall compared to Nagapattinam. In Tiruvarur, crops in more than 1 lakh acre submerged and in Thanjavur around 80,000 acres suffered damaged.
