    Downpour continues to pound Rameswaram for second day

    Though four coastal districts in southern region continue to receive downpour, Rameswaram is one of the worst affected areas as for the second continuous day. The coastal town received more than 30 mm of rainfall, on Saturday.

    Due to low pressure formed near Sri Lanka, the coastal districts continue to receive heavy rainfall while the interior districts of Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Theni and Dindigul are left with mild showers at regular intervals. 

    Rainfall at Rameswaram started on Friday midnight and continued till Saturday early morning. The neighbouring areas of Thangachimadam and Pamban also received decent rainfall of 18.2 mm and 14 mm. Due to the incessant rain, Thangachimadam was flooded resulting in no vehicular movement in the coastal village. 

    Similarly at Pamban, the sea was rough and there were high tides. As a result, sea water had entered a country boat which was tied at the Pamban coast and it was about to be submerged. However, with the help of fishermen, the boat was retrieved. 

    At Tirunelveli, though the rain had decreased, the bunds of a water tank near Pettai in Tirunelveli were damages and the water entered the residential areas resulting in inundation. The water level in the dams had increased due to continuous rainfall.

    Similarly at Kanniyakumari district, Adaiyamadai received the highest rainfall of 31 mm. Dams such as Perunchani and Mambazhathurai received good rainfall of 10.6 mm and 4 mm respectively. At Thoothukudi, water bodies which had gone completely dry in 2016 were completely filled.

    Woman dies in wall collapse 

    A 48-year-old woman died when the wall in her house collapsed and fell on her at Maravankudiyiruppu near Nagercoil, on Saturday. The incident when the deceased Jansi Mary was preparing food near a seven foot wall. According to police, due to continuous rain the wall had completely soaked and weakened. Though Jansi who was caught under the rubble was rescued by the neighbours and was rushed to Asaripallam GH. However, she was declared brought dead.

    Girls hostel, houses collapse in Thanjavur 

    The continuous rains destroyed an Adi Dravidar (AD) Welfare Hostel and five houses in Thanjavur, on Saturday. While the heavy rains continued since Friday late hours, the roof of the AD Welfare Girls Hostel, located at Thirupananthaal near Kumbakonam, collapsed at 9.30 am. It is said, as many as 88 students have been staying in the hostel. Fortunately, they had all gone to the school on Saturday when the incident happened and so no one was hurt. Meanwhile, in Papanasam, five huts collapsed. Fortunately, the residents were away for their work. Subsequently, they were moved to the temporary shelter.
