Use of funds during EVKS tenure leads to fireworks in TNCC meeting

Former union minister P Chidambaram and senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan’s supporters crossed swords at the district Congress president’s meeting held at Satyamurthy Bhavan on Wednesday. District Congress president owing allegiance to Chidambaram demanded incumbent TNCC chief Su Thirunavukkarasar to ‘explain’ some transactions made in the party trust during Elangovan’s tenure.

Former Chennai Deputy Mayor Karate Thiyagarajan led the charge against Elangovan by urging Thirunavukkarasar to reveal the status of the alleged fund recovery from Elangovan. It was rumoured that Rs 1 crore was withdrawn from the party account in two instalments and utilised ahead of the May 2016 Assembly elections during Elangovan’s stint as TNCC chief.

“Thiyagarajan asked Thirunavukkarasar to give an update on the status of the show cause noticed said to be ordered by AICC in charge of TNCC trust Motilal Vohra and subsequent lawyer’s notice the TNCC chief had sent to Elangovan,” one of the district presidents who attended the meeting revealed.

Former TNCC president M Krishnasamy joined the issue with Thiyagarajan and demanded an answer from Thirunavukkarasar who downplayed the issue asking the duo not to make fuss about the issue, apparently, silencing Elangovan supporters who were annoyed by the offensive of the PC camp.

Perhaps, Thiyagarajan and Krishnasamy might have been encouraged by the opening statement of Thirunavukkarasar who took a veiled dig at Elangovan by asserting that the TNCC was not ‘paralysed’ as some people argue. It was Elangovan who had stated a few days ago that the Congress was dysfunctional in TN.

Just when Thirunavukkarasar was trying to do the balancing act, a couple of district Congress presidents sought clarity on appointment of new district party heads. It was widely rumoured among party functionaries of late that AICC could reshuffle the district office bearers soon. However, Thirunavukkarasar silenced them by announcing that they would continue to be DCC presidents and it was a matter of time before the high command announced the appointment.
