Retired VAO gets 7-year jail term for graft
A retired VAO and his assistant were awarded seven-year imprisonment each on Tuesday for demanding bribe from an elderly woman to get her welfare assistance after the trial went on for 18 years.

On July 14, 1999, P Mehrunnisha, a widow, approached Srinivasan (65) and his assistant Ganesan (70) for getting a certificate for availing of window pension and the duo demanded Rs 500 as bribe. However, she alerted the DVAC and the duo were caught red-handed. The Ariyalur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court awarded seven-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 to the duo.
Ganja peddlar gets life
A ganja peddler was awarded life-term on Tuesday in Coimbatore for killing a 28-year-old man in a quarrel that broke out while selling the contraband on May 21, 2016.
Police said Shankar, a native of Ramanathauram district, along with his friend Nandakumar had gone to buy the contraband from Gandhivelu,” police said.
“The duo met him at the bus terminus, when the quarrel broke out. Gandhivelu stabbed Shankar and Nandakumar with a knife,” police said. The Sai Baba Colony police registered a case of murder and arrested Gandhivelu. The special court imposed life term on him and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.
Life for murder
The Tiruchy Mahila Court here on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a 24 -yearold woman for murdering her 82-year-old house owner and snatching away her 10-sovereign jewels.
T Muthurathnavathi of Butterworth Road had rented out her first floor to Ravindran who was residing there with his daughter Divyapriya (24), a teacher. Divya used to invite her boyfriend home and when the house owner threatened Divya that she would reveal it to her parents, Divya stabbed Muthurathnavathi with a knife, who succumbed. She then relieved the body of a 10-sovereign gold chain to make it appear to the police that it was a murder for gain.
However, Fort police fixed Divya as the offender from the CCTV footage and was arrested. On Tuesday, the Mahila Court awarded life imprisonment to her.
