In a statement, DMK working president MK Stalin, who deplored the sugar price hike, said the party would hold demonstrations in front of fair price shops in the state condemning the ruling AIADMK and the BJP-led Centre for cancelling the PDS subsidy given for essential commodities.

Claiming that the DMK had supported the Food Security Bill only after the then union food minister KV Thomas had assured in the Parliament that Union government’s allocation for the PDS would not be cut down after the implementation of the Act, Stalin alleged that the ruling AIADMK has shunned its responsibility to remind the Centre about the UPA regime’s assurance.

Opining that the sugar price hike would affect the people adversely, the DMK working president said that the AIADMK regime did not appeal to the Centre about the cancellation of subsidy on sugar the same way it had kept mum on GST and NEET issues.

Accusing Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Food Minister Kamaraj, Stalin further said the truth remains that the AIADMK regime has wholeheartedly agreed to relinquish the central subsidy for PDS in the state and hence, the just effected near doubling of PDS sugar price.
