Chennai-Arakkonam EMUs to have 12 coaches
In a bid to reduce the daily overcrowding of EMUs (Electric Multiple Units) lying between Chennai Central and Arakkonam junction, the railway safety commissionerate has okayed 12 coaches as against the present 8, railway sources revealed.

Though the Arakkonam railway users committee had been repeatedly requesting an increase in the number of coaches for years, it was all of no avail till now. Till now only EMUs plying between Tambaram and Chennai beach were provided with 12 coach rakes. Railway officials on condition of anonymity revealed that 80 coaches were in the last stages of construction at the Chennai Perambur ICF.Â
Similarly, stations on the Chennai central – Arakkonam route needed to have their platforms extended to accommodate additional 4 coaches. Shorter platforms were extended to 300 metres to accommodate 12 coaches and this work was nearly over, they added.
