However, airport officials said, while there are several ways for lodging a complaint, the victim had not followed it. As there is no complaint, the officials are yet to initiate action.
The video was posted in a Facebook group Live Day Tamil Nadu by a passenger from Kuala Lumpur who is a Malaysian citizen. He had travelled to Tiruchy along with his wife, an Indian and an eight-month-old baby on October 7.
According to the video, the passenger, who had not revealed his identity except for his nationality, claimed that he was stopped by a Customs Official named Prem Babu from Karaikal. He was asked to remove his 9-sovereign gold chain. When the passenger demanded the reason, the official according to the video asked him to wait and asked him to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh as fine. “I arranged the sum through a relative in Tiruchy and gave it to Prem Kumar. Only then, I learnt that the amount was not a fine but a bribe to the officer,” said the narration.
Meanwhile, when contacted, an official from the airport said that there are several ways to air one’s grievances but the passengers had not done that. He even failed to reveal his identity except the nationality which would be a tougher task for the officials to go further with the complaint.
However, a senior official from Customs said that they had also viewed the video and a team of officials are discussing the issue and planning to initiate action against the particular official. A combing operation is also being planned.
