Madurai district is witnessing one of the worst dengue outbreaks in the recent years, but the health department is unable to cope with the increasing number of patients.
Madurai
There is a severe shortage of beds in the Madurai GRH. The situation has forced patients to lay their beds on the floor. According to nursing sources inside Madurai GRH, due to shortage of beds in dengue ward, the patients are being admitted to other wards such as general medicine, toxicology and so on. This has been done to stop panic among the people.
Health Activist, Anandraj from Madurai, said that doctors and officials are aware that there will be an increase of dengue cases during the monsoon but they have not taken proper measures and this has resulted in deaths due to dengue. After the 2012 outbreak, doctors and the government have begun to refer to dengue as ‘mysterious fever’. Only when suspected deaths due to fever are audited, the exact reason can be found. However, the officials are not ready for it, said Anandraj.Â
