Book cops in cheek-piercing case, demands Opposition leader MK Stalin

DMK working president M K Stalin on Wednesday asked the city police commissioner to comply with NHRC (National Human Rights Commission) order and book cases under stringent penal provisions against cops who had remained mute spectators when 20 children were forced to undergo cheek-piercing in North Chennai during former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s hospitalisation.

Expressing shock at the reported submission of the city police commissioner before the NHRC that the children took part in the event with their parent’s consent, Stalin said that it was agonising to see attempts being made to save people who had violated the human rights of children.

He also asked the CoP to book the errant cops under stringent provisions of Indian Penal Code and Juvenile Justice Act as per NHRC order. Joining the issue with Stalin, PMK founder Dr Ramadoss described the reported event as ‘draconian’ and asked the ‘benami’ government to publicly apologize to NHRC and the people of Tamil Nadu for subjecting children to torture.

Opining that the ruling AIADMK should be ashamed by the condemnation of NHRC for torturing children in a state where children were being treated as gods, Ramadoss said that chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam could not disown responsibility as the incident had happened in the presence of key functionaries of both AIADMK factions, and worse human right violations took place in the presence of the CM and his deputy. He also urged the government to initiate disciplinary proceedings against errant cops and pay Rs 5 lakh each as compensation to affected children.

    Stalin welcomes HC order

Meanwhile, Stalin has wholeheartedly welcomed the Madras HC order restraining the government from taking school students to MGR anniversary functions.

Stating that the court order has put an end to children being put through hardship, Stalin has also asked education department officials not to spoil the education of students by taking them to government functions, where politics is spoken.
