The Madurai bench of Madras High Court judges MM Sundaresh and N Sathish Kumar on Wednesday opined that parents should opt for Tamil names for their children to promote the language on Wednesday. Petitioner Stalin, a lawyer from Melur in Madurai district, in his PIL stated that the former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran, at the World Tamil Conference held at Madurai in 1981, had assured to construct a World Tamil Sangam building in Madurai.
The building was completed in the year 2016 at a cost of Rs 25 crore and was dedicated to Tamil people. Even after one year of inauguration, the building is not open to the public yet. Also, there are no proper Tamil books to develop the language. There is no facility to sit and study in the building.
The building even lacks basic amenities like toilets and drinking water. “With just a building, Tamil language cannot be developed. So, the court should direct the state government to keep Tamil books and improve facilities at the Tamil Sangam building,” prayed the petitioner.
When the petition was heard by the judges, they opined that the habit of reading Tamil books had declined and to develop the language quality Tamil books should be read. Also, the parents should opt for Tamil names for their children to promote the language, they added.
