Trichy: Ex-deputy mayor gets 10-year imprisonment in woman cheating case
The former deputy mayor, his mother-in-law and two of his friends were awarded 10-year imprisonment for cheating a woman with the false promise of marriage and abandoning her as soon as she became pregnant.

R Durgeswari (32), daughter of Ranjith Rana Singh, an ex-service man from New Delhi presently residing at Duraisamypuram near Sangiliyandapuram in Tiruchy City, who gave birth to a female baby on May 4, 2014, approached the Ponmalai All Women Police station on June 12, 2014 and lodged a complaint against Asick Meera alias Mariam Asick, the then Deputy Mayor for cheating her with the promise of marriage and sexually assaulting her.
She said that they were in a relationship for long and they got married her in 2006. She conceived twice but Asick had forced her to terminate the pregnancy stating that he could take her to his house only after the got his father’s consent, the then Minister Mariam Pichai, who later died in an accident. However, Asick failed to keep up his words and abandoned her. He had even threatened her of dire consequences. Later, the police registered a case and it was on progress at a Judicial Magistrate court III here and was subsequently transferred to Mahila Court.
Meanwhile, Asick Meera married his cousin Sajitha Begam and the couple have two children. Durgeswari too became pregnant and she delivered of a baby this time. Asick Meera hired some henchmen to kill her. The shocked Durgeswari went to the extent of committing suicide but was saved by her mother.
On Friday, the case came up for hearing at the Mahila Court and Judge Jacintha Martin gave 10 years imprisonment to Asick Meera and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000.
