In the event, 96 school children from Tamil Baptist Primary School, Ettayapuram, and Mariappa Nadar Middle School at Ettayapuram dressed as Bharathiyar were taken to the Bharathiyar Centenary memorial at Ettayapuram. At the memorial, they sang several songs of Bharathiyar and garlanded his statue.Â
The students then took a pledge to implement the ideals of Bharathiyar such as freedom for women, caste free society, patriotism and knowledge. Students took out a rally to Bharathiyar’s house at Ettayapuram and raised patriotic slogans such as Vande Mataram.Â
When they reached his house, they sang a number of songs composed by him and garlanded his statue. Muthumurugan, Founder, Bharathiyar Memorial Trust, led the students’ rally and administered the pledge to the students. Bharathiyar still lives through his poems, said Muthumurugan. Bharathiyar was not just a poet but also a freedom fighter. He kindled the spirit of nationalism through his songs and became an opponent of the British government.Â
