Three-member committee inspects Cauvery sand quarries
Following the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court order, the special committee for assessing illegal sand quarrying in Cauvery riverbeds began its inspection process. On Wednesday, officials of the committee visited some of the quarry spots in the Kondayampettai sand quarry in Tiruchy.

After the Cauvery Neervala Pathukappu Sangam had the filed a petition to the Madurai bench of the Madras High court on August 24 about the excessive river sand mining in Cauvery and Kollidam riverbeds, the high court has ordered to formed the committee of three including two advocates and a plant science professor of the Manomaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli to assess the existing sand quarrying and the damage caused to the river bed because of these operations in all the quarries in Karur and Tiruchy and to submit the report by September 12.
Based on the orders, the committee which commenced their inspection from Mayanur in Karur, reached Tiruchy on Wednesday.
The committee inspected the sand quarries located at Kondayampettai, Thiruvasi, KiIliyanallur, and Panayankurichi.
