CM Edappadi K Palaniswami launches MES, other infra projects
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami threw open as many as 39 Multipurpose Evacuation Shelters constructed in three coastal districts at a cost of Rs 101 crore among other infra projects across the state through a videoconferencing session from the Secretariat.

According to a release, as many as 121 MES were being constructed by the PWD under Coastal Disaster Risk Reduction Project of revenue department. The buildings will function as schools, community halls, waiting halls and training centres during normal times and they will be used as evacuation shelters during emergencies. The shelters that accommodate evacuees have separate rooms to carry out health checks, a kitchen, drinking water facility and toilets.Â
The shelters will be administered by the District Disaster Management Committee which comprises District Collector, and nodal officers. Among the 39 shelters inaugurated on Tuesday, as many as 19 are in Ramanathapuam district, built at a cost of Rs 51.4 crore. Ten are in Pudukottai district constructed at a cost of Rs 27.05 crore and 10 are in Thanjavur district readied at a cost of Rs 23.27 crore.Â
Palaniswami also inaugurated a Central Market for vegetables, fruits, and flowers in Tiruchy, constructed by the Agriculture department at a cost of Rs 65 crore. The facility has 1,000 shops, a cold storage with the capacity of 2,000 metric tonnes, a weigh bridge that can handle up to 60 metric tonnes, 2 sorting yards, a bank and refreshment stalls. The CM inaugurated are 14 Integrated Agricultural Extension Centres constructed in various districts.
