    30 NEET protesters detained in Tiruchy

    As the agitation against NEET continued for the fifth day, police detained 30 protesters after they tried to burn effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Puthiya Tamilagam party leader K Krishnasamy here on Wednesday.

    The protesters said that the Centre was discriminating against Tamil Nadu students ,while the state government — instead of opposing the NEET system — did little to help the students which led to medical aspirant Anitha committing suicide. During the agitation, however, the protesters brought in effigies and attempted to burn them when the police intervened and detained 30 of them.

    Meanwhile, colleges in Ariyalur announced that they would be closed for three days.

    Student faints during hunger strike

    One of the six youngsters who were on a hunger strike for five days in their protest against NEET, fainted on Wednesday. He was admitted to Tiruchy General Hospital and is said to be stable. They were agitating in front of KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College and had smeared their faces with black paint.

    Ariyalur railway station receives bomb threat

    The station manager of Ariyalur Railway Station received an anonymous letter on Tuesday afternoon which stated that there would be an explosion within the station once every month until NEET is cancelled.

    The security at the station has been tightened and the police are on high alert.
