Dalit Girl, who moved SC against NEET, commits suicide in Tamil Nadu

In a heart-rending incident, a 17-year-old Dalit girl, who impleaded herself as a respondent in the Supreme Court, demanding an exemption to the contentious National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for Tamil Nadu allegedly committed suicide in her house at Kuzhumur village in Senthurai Taluk.

The girl S.Anitha was found hanging from the ceiling in her house this evening, police said.

Hailing from a poor family, Anitha, daughter of a daily wage labourer, secured 1,176 out of 1,200 marks in Class XII examinations on the State board syllabus. She scored high cut-off marks of 196.75 for Medicine and 199.75 for engineering courses. But, in NEET, the girl scored only 86 out of 700, as the National test was purely based on CBSE syllabus. Though she was offered a seat in Aeronautical engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology and was even selected for Bachelor of Veterinary Science in Government Veterinary College at Orathanadu, she refused to take and was determined to be a doctor.

Anitha took the extreme step after she was unable to secure a medical seat, her family members claimed.

The Tamil Nadu government had passed an ordinance seeking exemption from NEET, after the Centre announced that it was willing to exempt the State from NEET for one year. But, however, the Centre had reversed its stand with Attorney General of India K.K.Venugopal informing officials that the ordinance would not stand legal scrutiny. The Apex Court too directed the State to go ahead as per NEET rankings.

The Centre's reversal in stand dashed the hopes of thousands of medical aspirants in the State, who had hoped that medical admissions would be based on the results of the State board examinations.
