Now it’s easy, apply online for duplicate licence
As the state government has made it mandatory for motorists to carry original licence from September 1, there has been a lot of apprehension among the public over the measure. A major question is what will happen if one loses his driving licence and the process to get a fresh one.

However, transport and police officials say that the process has been simplified and, unlike in the past, there is no need for getting ‘non-traceable certificate’ from the police stations. Motorists can apply online to get a duplicate licence.
However, this arrangement comes with a minor hitch, as the applicant cannot drive or ride until he or she gets a new licence. According to transport officials, unlike in the past, the motorists, who lose licences need not go to police stations to get a non-traceable certificate.
“There are not much changes in the process connected to the issuance of a duplicate licence. Motorists can apply online, after which they will be provided with a reference number through their mobile phones.
Subsequently, motorists should approach the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) concerned and a duplicate licence will be issued within 15 days from the date of application,” explained a transport department official. A circular in this regard had already been sent to all the RTOs and officials have also been instructed to expedite the process of applications to issue duplicate licence to those motorists, who have lost their original document, the official added.
Speaking to DT Next, K Periaiah, Joint Commissioner (Traffic), said, “The order mandating carrying of original licence while driving or riding is aimed at reducing accidents and there is no other purpose behind it.”
It may be noted that the transport officials a few days ago conducted a review meeting to discuss the possible ways to reduce accident rate following an SC directive. Various stakeholders, including police personnel, Corporation officials and other top transport officials, participated in the meeting.
