Udayakumar joined the anti-nuke protest at Kudankulam in 2011 and spearheaded the protest since then. Udayakumar single-handedly faced the wrath of the government and had to face multiple challenges which included economic problem, family problem and also problem from various intelligence agencies who were constantly following them.

In the process he had lost his privacy and family life which he regrets now. Speaking to DT Next , he said that he was earlier the story teller for his two sons but when he left his house to head the protest he had to completely stay away from them for 2.5 years.

However his wife was so supportive to his protest and took care of his family that he could sail smoothly in turbulent times. Now his elder son has gone to college and his younger son is also ready for college which had given him more time to spend outside. Now he has more time to attend seminars and relatively spends more time with his family too to take care of his elderly parents. However the golden days of his family life were gone as he did not get required emotional support at the time in which he required.

Though there were residents of Idinthakarai and friends nearby during the protest the absence of his family and the emotional support from them had played a great role in his life for which he feels now said Udayakumar.
