    AAP plans nation-wide conference for farmers

    In an effort to urge the ruling State and Central government to address the farmers’ problems, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) is scheduled to organise a massive state-wide conference here on Sunday, said SAN Vasigaran, State Convener of the party on Thursday. All the farmers’ association presidents in Tamil Nadu and people from Kathiramangalam are expected to participate.

    Vasigaran said, “The AAP has decided to conduct conferences in several states and in the conference here, issues such as subsidising prevailing agricultural loans, forming of Cauvery management board and condemning the BJP government’s idea of placing methane projects in farm lands will be discussed.”

    AAP senior leader Ashutosh, Somnath Bharti, AAP MLA from Malviya Nagar, Delhi, P R Pandian and P Ayyakannu, president of the Association for Interlinking National-South Indian Rivers, are expected to participate.

    More than 10,000 farmers and residents from Kathiramangalam will also take part.

    Tiruvaiyaru farmer dies 

    R Michael (62) of Achanur Village near Tiruvaiyaur who had borrowed Rs 5 lakh from money lenders and raised beetal leaves in his two acre land died when the crop withered due to water scarcity.

    All his attempts to save it went it vain. When he visited the field on August 26, he had a massive heart attack and fell down unconscious. He was taken to the Thanjavur Medical college where he died despite treatment on Wednesday.

    Delta ryots seek disbursal of crop insurance claims, water for samba

    Farmers grievance meeting in various districts of Cauvery delta on Thursday witnessed protests by ryots for release of water to commence samba and the disbursal of crop insurance claims. The farmers also complained that the officials an unusual delay in disbursing dues despite producing proper documents.
    The farmers demanded at least 30 tmc of water from Karnataka.
    As they are getting ready to take up Samba cultivation, water is essential, said P Viswanathan, state president of Tank and River Ayacutdars Welfare Association.
    Supporting his argument, a few farmers staged a walk out and spilled paddy seeds before Collector K Rajamani and then in the Collectorate premises stating that the unusual silence by the state government will result in failure of Samba also.
    Farmers from Tiruchy, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai demanded the Collectors to disburse crop insurance claims at the earliest.
