Police modernisation became a national level programme due to the efforts of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, CM Edappadi K Palaniswami said, while handing over medals to the winners of the south zone shooting championship at the Madras Rifle Club (MRC) on Saturday.
Modernisation resulted in the MRC getting an international standard at a cost of Rs 4.85 crore, while the TN commandos training school at Othivakkam in Kanchipuram district hosted the all India police, rifle, pistol and revolver shooting championship some years ago.
Interest in various facets of police welfare resulted in the state government providing Rs 61.50 lakh to train police in shooting skills.
The state government providing Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh to the gold, silver and bronze medal winners in such competitions resulted in the state capturing the overall national championship continuously from 2011 to 2016, he added.
