    Processions, prayers mark Kovai Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations

    Religious fervour was at its best in Coimbatore city even a day before Vinayaka Chathurthi. Hindu outfits and various organisations had nearly 2,000 idols, mostly of 12-15 feet tall, ready to be kept at many places in the city.

    According to the police, the idols installed at the public places will be immersed in a phased manner till August 29. Around 12,000 police and home guards personnel have been deployed for security across the three city and eight district police limits in Western Tamil Nadu. The district administration and police have identified water bodies for immersion, On the other hand, considering the intensity of the drought and unavailability of water in lakes and tanks, various organisations have promoted eco-friendly idols.

    Competitions to make them were organised to promote idols that would dissolve at ease and would not cause harm to the ecology. The tanks and would in turn become a source of food for aquatic life. Some smaller eco friendly idols have been made with seeds and clay so that they would improve the green cover.
