    Ex-DSP’s son among 3 held for waylaying in Coimbatore

    city police on Friday arrested three youth, including the son of a retired DSP, for allegedly threatening college students on the pretext of policing, grabbing their money, mobile phones and pen drives and extorting money from them.

    This incident came to light, when a victim lodged a complaint with the Peelamedu police on Friday, following which the gang was caught red-handed.

    The police identified the accused as B Srivasanth (21) of Chinniyampalayam, who is the son of a textile mill owner and is pursuing third year in an arts and science college in the city, J Pradeepraj (24) of Sowripalayam, who is the son of a retired DSP and V Satheesh (29) from Ramanathapuram who is a call taxi owner. According to the police, preliminary inquiry has revealed that the trio got acquainted during the jallikattu protests.

    Inquiry with the victim and the accused revealed that the trio used to corner lovers and college students at the CODISSIA Ground Road when the road is not much used during the day. On the pretext of policing, the trio used to check the youth, grab their money and check the pictures and documents in their mobile phone and pen drive. The gang would then call the student and threaten to expose the pictures in the mobile phone or other electronic gadget and extort money from them. One such victim was Arman Shalik (19) of RS Puram, who pursuing is a student of a leading arts and science college near Hope College. The student who was harassed by the trio raised suspicion over their behaviour.

    The trio assaulted him, grabbed Rs 1,500 from him and sent him that day. Arman then approached the Peelamedu police, who advised him to go to the place where the trio asked him to come on Friday to give them money (to get back his pen drive). As he went to them, the police surrounded the gang and arrested them.
