Sharmila gave me a new life: Desmond
Desmond Coutinho who married Irom Sharmila at Kodaikanal, on Thursday, said that she had given him a new life. He elaborated that when he was associated with Christ College at Bengaluru he first read about Irom Sharmila in the book ‘Burning Bright’ and learnt about her struggle. He was moved by her hunger strike and began communicating with her through letters. They met one day.

Since the end of her hunger strike I was waiting for the marriage and it had finally taken place on Thursday. It was a dream come true for me and Sharmila has given me a new life, said Desmond.
Desmond (55), a British citizen who is residing in India with a tourist passport. His ancestral roots are traced to Goa. In the marriage application submitted at the sub-registrar office at Kodaikanal he had mentioned that he was unemployed.
Another interesting aspect in the records is that Coutinho had mentioned that his period of stay at their house in Kodaikanal would be for just two months.
