Officials attached to Madurai district administration, army and paramilitary personnel paid respects to the body of deceased army jawan when it was brought to Madurai airport, on Monday. The body was brought in a special army flight. After army officials paid respect, Madurai Collector, K Veera Raghav Rao, and District SP, Manivannan, paid respects to Ilayaraja.
Relatives of Ilayaraja who came to receive the body broke down when it was handed over to them. Rajasekar, cousin on Ilayaraja said, that the entire village was mourning the death of Ilayaraja. The entire village will not celebrate Independence Day, said Rajasekar.
Father unaware of death
Speaking about his family, Ilayaraja’s wife Selvi, who is four months pregnant, was visibly distraught. His father Periyasamy had left the village recently and is yet to return. He might not even know the death news of his son, said Rajasekar.
Two soldiers, Ilayaraja and Gawai Sumedh Waman, from Akola in Maharashtra, were killed in an anti-militancy operation that began on Saturday evening at Shopian’s Awneera village, 70 km from Srinagar, where a joint team of police, Army and CRPF faced off with militants after intelligence reports suggested that some important terrorists leaders were holding a meeting inside a local mosque.
Following the death of Ilayaraja from Kandani village in Sivaganga district, his kin were informed and a pall of gloom descended on the entire village. Since Sunday noon, villagers have been visiting the house of Ilayaraja and consoling the family.
Ilayaraja is the second sepoy to get killed in the recent years from the same village. One Bhuvaneshwaran had died in an avalanche in 2016. The villagers informed that the arrangements had been made to bury Ilayaraja in the evening.
Solatium
According to a press release, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday announced a solatium of Rs 20 lakhs to the kin of Ilayaraja.
