Clear roads leading to sand quarries, demand farmers
Farmers here submitted a petition to the PWD officials on Thursday to clear the makeshift roads laid near sand quarries in Cauvery river as they would prevent free flow of water towards delta districts.

Ayilai Siva Suriyan, district president of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam (CPI), said that between Mayanur check dam and the Grand Anicut (Kallanai), at least 13 recognised sand quarries are functioning.Â
The farmers attributed the delay in the arrival of Cauvery water released from Mettur dam to the sand roads on the river bed and usage of illegal high power water pumps to draw water from the river.Â
Senior PWD officials here in Tiruchy upon receiving the petitions told the farmers that actions will be taken against the makeshift roads on the Cauvery river bed and against the illegal tapping of water after obtaining approval from higher authorities.Â
