Soon, Wi-Fi facility at Tambaram railway station
If you are a regular rail traveller boarding and alighting at Tambaram station, then mobile data shall soon be the least of your concern, at least during the time you spend at the station. Tambaram terminal might become the third in the divisional headquarters to get free wi-fi service after Chennai Central and Egmore, where unlimited wi-fi service is being offered to visitors for up to a day.

It has been reliably learnt that Southern Railways was in favour of extending the wi-fi service to Tambaram, which, officially, became the third terminal on Monday with the operation of two
north bound express trains from there.
Senior SR officials said they would consider extending wi-fi service to Tambaram. “It is a bit early to launch immediately. Free wi-fi service at Tambaram will be considered as soon as more express trains are operated from there.
We have the infrastructure as rail wire network is available everywhere. It has become the third terminal with the operation of express trains from there on an experimental basis. We have to take the consent of headquarters when the footfall of long distance travellers increases there,” said a senior SR officer of the division, on condition of anonymity.
First, it should be assessed as to where (platform or waiting area) maximum long-distance travellers gather. Then, the required infrastructural support would be provided before launching the service, the officer explained. Notably, SR ought to do more than launching the service.
It would do well to publicise its service even in existing areas like Central and Egmore, where many travellers were either unaware of or ill-informed of the free wi-fi service.
Mathias, a school vice principal from Chengalpet who was annoyedly trying to refresh a webpage on his smartphone on Wednesday, said, “I am not aware of such a facility being offered here,” standing barely a few feet away from the wi-fi kit in the concourse area.
Vishal Singh, an Airforce officer from Sulur Air station in Coimbatore who was on his way to Secundarabad, blinked in amazement before admitting that he did not have an idea about the station offering free wi-fi. The travellers have little to blame, for, there was hardly a signage to sufficiently inform people of wi-fi availability.
But for a few phone-fiddling youngsters from Sowcarpet, who made good use of the service, most travelers DT Next spoke had no clue whatsoever about the wi-fi service provided for over a year now.
