TNCC chief, cadre held for protesting attack on Rahul’s car
Leaders of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, including state party president Su Thirunavukkarasar, were on Saturday arrested for staging a road roko in the city, condemning the BJP for allegedly attacking Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s convoy in Gujarat.
Chennai
Supporters of BJP and RSS had allegedly pelted stones at the Congress vice president’s car when the latter had visited Gujarat to inspect flood affected areas on Friday.
Thirunavukkarasar, who led the road roko at Valluvar Kottam in the city, termed the attack as ‘undemocratic’ and ‘barbaric.’ He further asked, “BJP leaders LK Advani and AB Vajpayee had toured the country, did Congressmen pelt stones at their vehicle or attack them.”
“BJP was in the Opposition in many states, did Congressmen attack the opposition party leaders then?” he said wondering what would have been the consequence had the stones pelted allegedly by the saffron party members hit Rahul.
When media persons drew his attention to the staging of a road roko after obtaining permission for a demonstration, Thirunavukkarasar justified that the attack happened ‘yesterday’ and the road blockade was also a democratic form of protest.
Earlier, DMK working president M K Stalin had registered his condemnation on the attack of Rahul’s convoy and said, “Democratic rights of a political party cannot be cowed down by violence.”
