They said Pushpalatha, hailing from Pollachi in the district, who was admitted with symptoms of dengue two days ago, succumbed in the early hours.

Meanwhile, 72-year-old Subramani, a resident of Annur, some 35 kms from here, died of the disease this afternoon.

He was admitted to the hospital yesterday, they said.

A four-year-old girl and a middle aged woman had died of dengue in the hospital two days ago and with today's deaths, the toll rose to 16 in the last two months, the sources said.

Despite preventive measures being taken on a war-footing to prevent the spread of dengue, new admissions are on the rise and about 60 patients, particularly from Pollachi area, are undergoing treatment at the hospital and around 200 others for different types of fever, the sources said.

The government had stated on July 22 that it was acting on a "war-footing" to tackle the spread of dengue in some parts of the state.

DMK MLA from Singanallur N Karthik had on Sunday alleged that Coimbatore Corporation's failure to maintain sewers and clear garbage had led to spread of dengue and other fevers in the district.
