Sources close to Dhanush told DT Next, “Dhanush was moved by the documentary. However, it is Dhanush Fan Club members, along with 11 assistant directors, who gathered information about the struggling family members of the deceased farmers. They also turned out to be from the hometown of Dhanush’s mother in Theni called Sankarapuram.”

Director Subramania Siva said, “I told Dhanush about the plight of our farmers when he was shooting for his Hollywood film abroad. When he landed in India, he had told me and director Velraj to visit his native and acquire police permission, since he wanted to perform pooja to his family deity. He had also informed me that he would like to help the families of struggling farmers.”

The director further said, “We sent out 11 assistant directors across Tamil Nadu and found out that 125 families were affected. Even Sanakarapuram was affected by drought and farmers had to save their crops by arranging for water supplies in tanker lorries from other districts. After listening to these stories, we assembled all these families in Theni where Dhanush donated Rs 50,000 to 121 families as four other families refused to accept the help.”

Siva also said that the charity was done based on the statistics that were available till March 2017. “We are checking if there are more families that are struggling and will extend our help to them as well,” he added.
