Officials from Airport Authority of India (AAI) based at Madurai said that the service which is between New Delhi and Singapore via Madurai will be operated four times a week. The flight from New Delhi will reach Madurai at 10.15 pm and will leave for Singapore from Madurai at 11.15 am. In the return journey from Singapore, the flight will reach Madurai at 12.05 pm and leave for New Delhi at 1.35 pm.

The flight service would be the third international flight service apart from Colombo and Dubai. The new service would attract passengers from southern districts to Madurai Airport who are at present using Tiruchirappalli Airport for reaching Singapore and Malaysia.

However, the problem of shortage of airport staff and CISF personnel would be a task to be attended by the AAI. An official at Madurai Airport said that there are 12 departments concerned with the operation of international flights such as immigration, emigration, customs and so on and at present as there are no international flights in the night, the staff complete their work and leave at 10 pm. As the new flight is operated in the late night, the staff need to work at least till 12 pm.

Residents besiege revenue officials against land acquisition for airport

Residents close to the Tiruchy airport besieged revenue officials who went to distribute the orders of land acquisition for airport expansion here on Tuesday. It is said, as a part of airport expansion, 600 acres of land has been earmarked by the government.

The survey numbers of the lands to be acquired have also been listed. While the land owners have been opposing it, Tiruchy West VAO Padmanaban and Revenue Inspector Gomathy went to Kottapattu village where lands of 180 persons were short listed. When they attempted to distribute the land acquisition orders, the residents gheroed them and refused to accept the orders. They told the officials that they had already petitioned the elected members and the district collector and will continue to oppose it.

On information, Tiruchy East Tahsildhar rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. Upon his assurance, they allowed the officials to go.
