    Assembly committee assures staff for Saraswathi Mahal Library

    The Assembly Committee on Libraries assured on Tuesday that it would take up with the school education ministry about up of vacancies in the Saraswathi Mahal Library and recommend for more funds for its development.

    The committee headed by KV Ramalingam, MLA of Erode West, inspected the library and said that the members of the Governing council have raised the issue of a vacancy of a Tamil pundit with a doctorate, a requirement for the library to function as a research centre of Bharathidasan University. Ramalingam also said the vacancy of conservator would also be looked into. He promised that the committee would recommend more funds for the library. 

    He added that the demand for increasing the duration of courses on Grantha, Telugu, Samskrity and deciphering of palm leaves from the present 15 days to six months and awarding a certificate would also be taken up. 

    Meanwhile, various associations submitted a petition to Ramalingam demanding posting of a special officer from education department for smooth functioning of the library. The associations also wanted the ancient paper manuscripts in modi script preserved in the library to be translated and published. Besides they wanted the modi manuscripts in the Chennai Archives to be brought to Thanjavur. They also wanted the manuscripts kept in the library to be maintained properly.

    The members of the assembly committee inspected the ancient manuscripts in the library, the method of their preservation and the process of digitization of the manuscripts. Later they visited the library of Karanthai Tamil Sangam. A Annadurai, the District collector, accompanied the committee.
