Anna University new system allows only 36 credits

Following Anna University’s recent announcement that instead of taking up arrears, students who fail in a subject would have to re-register and reappear for exams when the subject is offered next, educationists point out that some students may find it difficult as they will have to appear for all internal tests through the semester all over again.

Explaining the process, TV Geetha, Dean, College of Engineering, said, “No arrears doesn’t mean no failures. In the new system, if the students fails in one subject, he or she can appear for what we call as re-appearance registration. For instance, if they fail in first semester, they appear for it in the third semester. Their internals are no more valid. The student will have to earn the internal marks again and write the final test..” The idea, instead of writing arrears, will help students study well in the subject. Normally, a semester consists of 21-24 credits. Student can at best appear for 36 credits in a semester including reappearance registration, she added.

However, some educationists feel that this will put pressure on students. “Some students might find it tough to write internal tests again. Also, the students are allowed only 36 credits that will put pressure on the students,” says educationist S Somasundaram.

Earlier there were students who took a break due to personal issues and finished their degree when they find time. The new system will ensure that this practice is controlled and students ensure that they try finishing their re-appearance registration process. M Sekar, former Dean of the University says that students should not be worried, “Most of the systems are almost the same. The only difference that could be seen is in the mark sheets.

Earlier, the mark sheet will show failure if the student failed in a subject in the semester. Now, if they pass the next time, there will be a pass against the subject.
