Chennai takes cue from ‘smart’ Kovai for sensory, traffic parks
The Greater Chennai Corporation is proposing to set up a ‘sensory park’ and a ‘traffic park’ in the city under the Smart City initiative.
Chennai
After Coimbatore, Chennai will soon have the park located south of Napier Bridge near Anna Memorial. “The place we are planning the traffic park is currently in a dilapidated condition.
The facility will have all the components of a park, like the greenery, for instance. But it will be designed as a road set-up, with traffic signals and signs and simulators, which will help create awareness on road safety.
The visitors, who come to Marina beach, can visit this park too,” said a senior Corporation official, adding that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will soon be in progress. The Children’s Traffic Park in Coimbatore boasts of a traffic track, featuring all elements of road safety – such as traffic signs and signals, as well as simulators and even a ‘theoretical education room’, where children can undergo basic awareness on traffic rules, before taking a tour of the park.
The ‘sensory park’ will be located adjoining the State Resource Centre for the differently abled in Santhome.
“The park will be accessible to all and will have features to stimulate all the five senses,” said the official. The DPR for this project is at an advanced stage.
Madurai, earlier this month, inaugurated a park for children with disability with specially-designed equipment, wheelchair assisted play area and even a sensory garden, constructed at a budget of Rs 40 lakh. The funding, which will come from the Smart City budget, will be finalised after the study.
