    Bootlegger dies in custody in Nagai

    In an attempt to secure the bootleggers who were allegedly brewing alcohol, the Kizhvelur police in Nagapattinam, reportedly assaulted one to death while trying to board him to the police vehicle. Relatives refused to accept the body and have been demanding action against the police.

    It is said, the Kizhvelur police received an information that a gang has been brewing alcohol in a hidden location at Kadambanur near Kizhvelur and soon rushed to the spot and secured T Suresh (34), his brother T Jayaraman (41), Devendran (61), Ganesh (36) and Durai (52) and attempted to take them to the police vehicle. While everyone got into the vehicle, Suresh had refused to do so but tried to escape from the spot. 

    However, the police who secured him had allegedly assulted him with the ‘lathi’ he had.  When he tried to escape, the police caught hold of him and reportedly attacked him to get into the vehicle. But, Suresh who could not bear the pain fell down after he had a fits due to severe pain. The police then rushed him to the Nagapattinam GH. 

    However, he died on the way. Subsequently, the body was sent for the post mortem. Meanwhile, on information, the relatives of Suresh rushed to Nagapattinam GH and staged a demonstration demanding action against the Kizhvelur police. They also refused to accept the body. In the meantime, Judicial Magistrate P Kavitha arrived at the GH and the post mortem was conducted in her presence. 

    The magistrate also conducted an inquiry with Amaravathi, wife of Suresh. Later, the relatives received the body after the revenue officials assured them of judicial inquiry.
