Auto driver succumbs to stab injuries, parties demand relief

The incident happened on Sunday, July 9, when the deceased Azhagar, a functionary attached to Puratchi Puligal Organisation, had questioned two men, Sadham Hussein and Kalimuthu, who were abusing a girl in their locality. It infuriated them and they stabbed Azhagar. Azhagar who sustained grievous injuries was admitted at the Madurai GRH but died on Wednesday night. 

Following his death, kin of Azhagar, fellow auto drivers and members attached to various Dalit organisations including VCK, Aathi Tamilar Peravai, Adi Tamilar Katchi and Puratchi Puligal organisation staged a road roko in front of the Madurai GRH demanding compensation for the family of Azhagar. They claimed that Azhagar’s wife, Nagajothi, has three children and it would be difficult for her to raise the them as Azhagar was the sole breadwinner of the family. 

Hence, Nagajothi should be given a government job and a compensation of Rs10 lakhs, they demanded. Policemen held talks with the protesters and assured them that their demands would be taken up with the Collector. Following the assurance, they withdrew their protests and accepted the body of Azhagar.
