Don’t want LPG and ONGC, say women of Kathiramangalam
With more than 3000 shops closed in support of Kathiramangalam protest at Kumbakonam and adjacent towns, residents of Kathiramangalam set up a community kitchen at Ayyanarkoil. They cooked using firewood stove, stressing that they can manage without LPG. They condemned the ONGC which had stated that they are drilling wells for supplying LPG to households.

Around 300 women from the village gathered at the Ayyanarkoil premises and began cooking using firewood stoves. The women in unison pointed out that the ONGC had come out with a statement that they have been drilling wells for supplying LPG to households only and the firm asked the women to keep away from the protest.
Continuing cooking, the women said, “Who needs their LPG?, what were we doing before the advent of LPG?”, they asked.
“We want ONGC to leave our village.” Meanwhile, the shops in Kathiramangalam remained closed for the eleventh day on Tuesday in protest against the ONGC operations, demanding the release of ten persons arrested during the protest on June 30.
Moreover, following a call for shut down of shops by the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai, the shops were closed in Aduthurai, Narasingampettai, Tiruvidaimarudur, Cholapuram, Pandanallur, Thathuvanchery, Anaikkarai, Tiruppanandal in Thanjavur district.
Members of Kudanthai Varthagar Sangam, Kudanthai Lawyers Association, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai organised a protest in front of Gandhi Park.
Salem students boycott classes
Hundreds of Government Arts College in Salem boycotted classes on Tuesday and staged a protest in support of villagers protesting the hydro carbon project at Neduvasal and condemning the police for attacking villagers who protested contamination of water at Kathiramangalam. There were similar protest by students at Tiruchengode on Monday. Protesters at Salem condemned the Governments for inaction over the issue and said continuance of situation will result in a state wide protest.
