Police said Murali (35), a resident of Chinavaram near Ponneri, died after he was stabbed in the stomach in the clash and the public caught the assailant, identified as Kannan (28), a resident of Arasur village and handed him over to the Ponneri police. Police said Murali and his four brothers have been  staying at Chinavaram in five different houses. The seven bachelors from Tiruchy, who work for a local engineering unit, have been staying as tenants at the residence of Murali’s elder brother Ramu. Police said the youth had been having some issue about the daily run of the house.

On Thursday night, one of the tenants came along with Kannan to the house. Police said the gang came to threaten the rival group among them and it soon became a verbal duel. House owner Ramu asked Kannan not to interfere in the problem. In a fit of rage, Kannan pulled out a knife and hacked Ramu. Hearing Ramu’s cries, Murali and his nephews Dhanasekhar and Lakshmanan rushed to the spot.

Soon the group started exchanging blows and Kannan stabbed Murali in the stomach. Ramu, Dhanasekhar and Lakshmanan also suffered bleeding injuries. When Murali collapsed  with bleeding injuries, all the tenants ran away. Public helped to shift Murali and the injured to the hospital. However, Murali was declared brought dead. Locals then beat up Kannan and handed him over to the Ponneri police. They also staged a road roko demanding the arrest of seven youths who escaped from the spot.
