The petitioner, Kathiresan, AITUC Town District Secretary, Madurai, had stated that he had recently read in the papers that the state government, on June 30, had extended Rajendran’s tenure by two years, despite several charges of corruption against him. According to I-T records, Rajendran had taken bribe from gutka companies and had permitted them to operate their plants in the state.

“There are many efficient IPS officers and why were they not considered for the DGP’s post,” Kathiresan asked. The petitioner also stated that the case should be handed over to the CBI. “The HC should declare the recent government order which allowed two years extension for Rajendran as null and void,” he added.

Judges KK Sasidharan and GR Swaminathan directed the CS to produce all the records relating to Rajendran’s appointment, and the Chief Commissioner of the I-T department to produce documents containing names of the government officials which were forwarded to the CS. The DVAC was also directed to produce the material forwarded by the Chief Secretary for quick verification pursuant to the action taken by I-T department.
