Tiruchy corporation offers gold coin for best waste segregation efforts
Encouraging residents to segregate domestic waste at source to ensure better implementation of the revised solid waste management practice, the city corporation has introduced a novel scheme. He has promised to gift one gram gold coin every week for one resident, selected by a lucky draw, who efficiently segregates domestic waste.

After a new and effective system was kicked off, a 63-year-old man was the first recipient of the award for the first week. The Collector gifted him the gold coin at a function on Wednesday. Â Â
In the new system even doorto-door collection of waste is segregated. Unlike the usual waste collection practice during which sanitary workers during door-todoor collection of wastes would receive the trash that contains both biodegradable (vegetable and food waste) and non-biodegradable (plastic covers and bottles), since June first week, sanitary workers have been receiving biodegradable waste everyday except Wednesdays which has been earmarked for collecting only the dry non-biodegradable wastes.Â
The civic body has roped in city-based popular jewellers to sponsor the coins every week to the resident who has effectively segregated the waste.Â
According to the scheme, residents who are appropriately segregating the domestic trash by separating the degradable and non-degradable wastes should send a picture of their waste collection strategy to the civic body’s official WhatsApp account.Â
The selection has been computerised and the best ones are selected with the help of a software. The system will go on for one year. However, being the first week on this Wednesday, the lucky draw was held back and a resident was selected by the sanitary staff and inspectors.Â
As per their direct supervision, T Selvamani (63) of ward no 12 was selected for the gold coin for this week for his effective segregation of solid wastes. Â He was handed over the coin by the Corporation Commissioner N Ravichandran.
