Activists: Hold NEET counselling after Prez nod for 2 bills
Education activists are concerned about the confusion around the Nation Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test. Representatives from State Platform for Common School System (SPCSS) want the NEET counselling to be delayed till the President gives his assent on the two bills passed unanimously by the Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly regarding UG and PG Medical Admission.

Earlier this year, state Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar moved two bills in the assembly to exclude Tamil Nadu students from NEET. “Tamil Nadu Government, as soon as the results were announced the counselling dates and other details without considering the fate of the bills are still pending for the presidential assent.
The president is yet to say yes or no. For instance, someone on a death sentence seeking mercy petition cannot be hanged till the President dismisses it. Same as the case, the President has to say yes or no and based on that we can plan the further course of action. If the bill is rejected, the TN government should go to the court. If they don’t we will,” says Prince Gajendra Babu, SPCSS-TN. He further questioned the logic behind the reservations of seats.
“In the all India quota, they are talking about unreserved category. There no such category as the unreserved category. They are called open competition, for which the top scorers compete. After the open competition category is filled, the reservation process is followed.
Now, if you reserve the entire open competition quota for unreserved community, then the reservation itself is nullified. In this process if a candidate is an SC/ST or OBC and has tried for both all India and state quota.
If he or she is supposed to be in the open competition but doesn’t cut through and compete for the reserved category of the state quota on the basis of domicile, if they are a resident of TN. TN list in turn will be affected and it is a vicious circle. We want TN to get clarification from the Centre whether it is an open competition or is it reserved for unreserved category.”
