A Ranganayaki, who died of A (H1N1), was a resident of Maniyakarampalayam. She was being treated in a private hospital for high fever, when she tested positive for flu. She was then referred to the CMCH on June 17.

Despite treatment her health deteriorated and she breathed her last on Thursday. Officials in the Deputy Directorate of Health Services and the Coimbatore Corporation have reasons to be concerned about the death as the patient had not travelled out of city recently, ruling out the possibility that she could have contracted the virus elsewhere.

As officials were clear that she should have contracted the virus locally, a clean-up drive was carried out in areas close to Ranganayaki’s house. Preventive tablets were given to her family also. The number of A (H1N1) cases is on the rise since January.

While it is said that it has claimed more than 25 lives, health authorities claim that only 10 have died this year. The last person who died of the virus in Coimbatore was a 70-year-old man from Pollachi in March. The death of the woman on Thursday has sent strong signals that the virus has resurfaced  in Coimbatore.

Dengue: Meanwhile, Keerthana (19), the college student, who died of dengue, was a resident of Krishnapuram near Karumathampatty. It is learnt that the girl was admitted to a private hospital at Papanaickenpalayam in the city earlier this week. She died on Friday morning.  So far, seven persons afflicted with dengue have been admitted to the CMCH. This included five from Coimbatore and one each from Tirupur and Udhagamandalam. In all, 82 persons were being treated for the killer fever. Two special wards have been set up at the CMCH to accommodate patients afflicted with both dengue and A (H1N1).
