Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, in March, launched her signature campaign, Save Sakthi, a cause that aims to add more Mahila courts at the district level for speedy delivery of justice. The actress had said that the two-pronged campaign will ask for Mahila courts at all districts and the verdicts to be delivered within a stipulated period.

This week, the campaign was elevated to a different level altogether, when the Save Sakthi team met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palanisamy, on Monday, and put forth their requests. “We first met our CM to inform him of our requirements. We also updated him about the plans our former CM, the late J Jayalalithaa had for the setting up of Mahila courts. He assured that the government will look into the issue and will work towards making the dysfunctional Mahila courts across the state functional. We also spoke to him about the delayed justice system. There should be an efficient delivery system which would reinforce the fear among perpetrators,” said the co-founder of the campaign, Dr Deepa Muthukumar.

They went on to meet the Minister of State Law and Justice, PP Chaudhary, on Tuesday. Talking about the meeting, she said, “He immediately supported our cause and even announced his decision to send a letter to the Chief Ministers across India to make Mahila courts function more efficiently in every district. This is a very encouraging step and we look forward to it as it will help the campaign to succeed at a National level.” She also said that the campaign will now create the much-needed awareness among people in rural pockets of the nation, so that people do not avoid taking legal recourse because of the long delay.
