Protests against TASMAC outlet at Samalapuram
Opening of a new TASMAC outlet at Kalipalayam village on Tuesday drew the ire of the residents here. Stocks of liquor were brought to the newly constructed shop at Kalipalayam on Sunday night and it was opened on Monday. This attracted a strong protest from the agitated villagers.

The new outlet is located in the property owned by ‘Vepankaatu’ Mani, the local AIADMK secretary. He is said to be a well to do man who is into textile business.
“He has constructed a close to 400 feet long compound wall for the shop and its surrounding for the bar. It is located on the Samalapuram to Somanur Main Road that is used by more than 4,000 persons every day. We will intensify the protests till the shop is closed,” said Prabakaran, who led the protest on Tuesday.
More than 300 villagers took part in the protest at Pallapalayam on the Tirupur to Mangalam Road, for the second day.
Villagers lay down like a dead body and wore a garland of liquor bottles depicting the impact of addiction to alcohol. Villagers also petitioned the Collector seeking immediate closure of the outlet.

Protests were organised at two more places in Tirupur city demanding closure of new TASMAC outlets. Residents of Poongodi Nagar in Maniyakarampalayam resorted to a road blockade against an outlet there. It affected traffic for more than an hour. They said that they were under the impression that a scrap godown was coming up at the site but all of a sudden it was opened as a liquor shop on Monday. At Kallangadu in the city, residents picketed a building under construction as they suspected it to be a TASMAC outlet. After Veerapandi police pacified them, the protesters said they would be hitting the road again if they came to know that it is a TASMAC outlet.
