Petition seeks ban on sand mining in all rivers
A plea had been filed at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court for a complete ban on sand mining across all riverbeds in the state on Thursday. Petitioner Irulandi, a social activist from Madurai, in his petition, had stated that sand is the sole property of the river and only if there is adequate sand in the riverbed water could be stored. But, in the last 25 years, sand had been mined in excess from all the riverbeds of the state and the delta districts had gone dry due to the illegal sand mining. Even the ground water level had gone too low because of it. When the petition was heard on Thursday, the court sent notice to Chief Secretary of the state, Additional Chief Secretary of Environment and Forest Department and adjourned the case to July 12.
