Madurai woman does a Kannagi, demands justice at Collectorate
A 28-year-old woman at Madurai came to the Collectorate with a traditional anklet, Silambu , in her hand demanding justice from Madurai Collector.

The scene was similar to the one in the Tamil epic Silapathikaram in which, holding her silambu (anklet) Kannagi is said to have challenged the judgment of Pandiya King Nedunchezhian while dealing with a theft case in which her husband Kovalan was pronounced as the accused and awarded a death sentence.Â
By breaking the ornament she proved it to the king that his judgement was wrong and she is said to have burnt the city of Madurai.Â
In a similar manner, on Wednesday, a 28-year-old Stella Baby alias Gomathy, came to the Madurai Collectorate with the traditional anklet, Silambu, in her hand, demanding justice. There was a buzz at the Madurai Collectorate when the woman, a nurse from Sellur in Madurai, entered the premises with an anklet.
Soon, a crowd gathered around her. Explaining her plight, she said that she had been in love with Karthick for three years now.Â
All the while, Karthick had promised to marry her after his sister’s marriage. Believing him, the woman is said to have had physical relationship with him. She revealed that she had also aborted twice in the three-year relationship.Â
But recently, after the marriage of his sister when Stella had approached Karthick to marry her he had refused citing the difference in status. She felt cheated and approached the police twice. “But all my efforts were in vain.Â
No case was registered against him as his father was powerful in the diocese, she lamented. Even though a complaint was launched with the Madurai police commissioner no action was taken.Â
Hence to seek justice and to marry Karthick she had approached Madurai Collector  like Kannagi who was also denied of justice, said Stella.
